Christianne van der Wal, former president of the VVD and now Minister for Nature and Nitrogen, doesn’t expect national supporters of the VVD to agree to the controversial asylum law without criticism. “The VVD is certainly not a clap machine for Mark Rutte,” she told political journalist Sophie van Leeuwen.
The party looks forward to next Saturday’s party congress, where the controversial asylum law is under discussion. In a hoarse voice, the VVD party in the House of Representatives passed the asylum law, which, among other things, puts more pressure on municipalities to take in asylum seekers
It caused a small internal crisis in the VVD and even ‘Pope Rutte’ had to intervene to convince the parliamentary group of the asylum law. “We’ll talk about it on Saturday, it’s what you do within a political party,” says Van der Wal, who is “looking forward” to the debate with the members. The minister knows that there are criticisms among members, but believes it is still too early to pass judgment on the matter. “Let’s wait and see before Saturday.”
Distribution law under fire
Within the new asylum law, distribution is particularly controversial. The Distribution Act, as the Asylum Act is also known, regulates, among other things, coercion for municipalities that do not want to cooperate in the arrangement of places for asylum seekers. The cabinet also wants to limit the influx of asylum seekers, but how to do this is not yet clear. Only on the condition that the influx of asylum seekers was reduced did the VVD party agree to the plan.
