‘Jurassic Park’ star Sam Neill ‘happy to be alive’ after stage 3 blood cancer battle

Sam Neill has been open about his health, revealing in a recent interview that he has been diagnosed with blood cancer.

In an article published Friday, the ‘Jurassic Park’ star told the Guardian about the ‘dark moments’ of the past year when he discovered he had cancer.

“Those dark moments shed a light on a sharp relief, you know, and made me grateful for every day and infinitely grateful for all my friends. I’m just glad I’m alive,” he said.

According to the Guardian, Neill, 75, had swollen glands while promoting Jurassic World: Dominion in 2022. The actor’s doctor diagnosed stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, shortly after he had the swelling noticed.

According to the American Cancer Society, stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma is when the disease occurs in the lymph nodes on either side (above and below) the diaphragm or in the lymph nodes above the diaphragm and in the spleen.

Neill was reportedly receiving chemotherapy and started a new chemotherapy drug when the first treatment started to fail. The Guardian reported that Neill, who is now cancer-free, will take the drug every month “for the rest of his life”.

The actor, who has starred in TV series Peaky Blinders and The Sullivans, also spoke to the outlet about his upcoming book, Did I Ever Told You That?

“It was never my intention to write a book. But as I kept writing, I realized it actually gave me a reason to live, and I’d go to bed thinking, ‘I’m going to write about this tomorrow … it’s going to entertain me’,” he said. “And so it was really a lifesaver because I couldn’t have gone through that without doing it, you know.”

However, readers should read Neill’s “Did I ever tell you that?” Read. like a “cancer book”.

“I can’t stand her,” he said. “I’ll never read a bloody cancer book in my life again.”

Instead, the actor sees his illness as a “spiral” that runs throughout the book.

Earlier in the Guardian story, Neill said he “doesn’t care” about dying, but wishes he had “another decade or two” to enjoy the life and home he has.

“We’ve built all these beautiful terraces, we have these olive trees and cypresses, and I want to be there to see how everything is ripe,” he said. “And I have my lovely grandchildren. I want to see her grow up.”
