Freddy Prince Jr. know what the director has been up to this summer.
While Prince Jr. promoting the March release of his new horror movie podcast That Was Pretty Scary, he spoke to TooFab about making one of his most notable films, the 1997 teen slasher film I Know What You Did. Last Summer.”
Prinze Jr., who co-hosts the podcast with filmmaker Jon Lee Brody, revealed that his on-set experience filming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was pretty scary.
“The director didn’t want me in that movie and made it clear all along,” said Prinze Jr. in the podcast episode. “I needed a guide. I needed a director. I needed guidance and he tried not to give it.”
According to Prince Jr. Jim Gillespie, who directed the film, Clueless actor Jeremy Sisto had his sights set on playing Ray Bronson, but studio and screenwriter Kevin Williamson saw something in Prinze Jr. and wanted him to play Bronson. Consequently, Prinze Jr. that Gillespie had sorted it out for him.
Tensions on the set ran so high that the then 21-year-old actor said he woke up because he didn’t want to go to work and eventually considered quitting acting altogether. “He took notes on everyone before we shot except me,” Prinze Jr. exclaimed. “He made it a point to get me noticed every time.”
‘I’ll give it to the man. . . he didn’t make a fuss about it,” Prinze Jr. told TooFab. “There was no passive aggressiveness — which I hate — he was very direct about ‘I don’t want you in this movie.’ So when it’s your first job and you hear those words, you just freak out, man. It just destroys you.”
prince jr described receiving “psychotic tones” during filming, such as, “Don’t open your mouth, you look stupid doing that.”
“It was just the note, word for word, I’ll never forget it,” cried Prinze Jr. “And I think either I’m going to break down or I’m going to punch this man on the ass. head I remember Ryan [Phillippe] came up to me and said, ‘Fuck that man, man. How many times have you auditioned for this movie?’ and I say, “Five times.” He says, ‘Yeah, you deserve it. You weren’t offered the role, you earned it.’”
Prince Jr. Gillespie went on to say he exposed him to dangerous stunts he didn’t and shared a story on the podcast about how he narrowly avoided a boat propeller accident that could have killed him.
However, the “She’s All That” actor insisted he held no grudge against Gillespie. He said that if he hadn’t made the movie, he would never have met his wife, co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar, never furthered his career, and wouldn’t have the podcast he has now.
