Eddie Izzard gets a new name – one the British comedian has been looking for since childhood.
Speaking to Matt Forde for Tuesday’s episode of The Political Party podcast, the British comedian shared how she identifies, her pronouns and her new name.
“There’s one more name I’m going to add, Suzy, which I’ve wanted since I was 10,” says Izzard, who came out as transgender in 1985. “So I’m going to be Suzy Eddie Izzard. That’s how I’m going to roll, so people can choose what they want.”
The comedian said she would keep her public name “Eddie Izzard,” which she wanted to keep for the sake of recognition.
Izzard said she started considering other names after announcing in 2020 that she was using his/her pronouns.
Earlier in the podcast, when Forde asked if people “question themselves” when it comes to the comedian’s pronouns, Izzard joked, “I make mistakes with my own pronouns.”
The Oceans Twelve actress said she was considering changing her pronouns until she received an honorary doctorate from Swansea University in July 2019.
She recalled the ceremony when a chancellor referred to Izzard by his/her pronouns and listed their accomplishments.
“I just sat there and used his/her pronouns in a speech about hitting me,” she said. “And I said it [the chancellor] afterwards – it hit me with a certain positivity. It just felt great. And I said, “Thanks for that.”
“And so I wrote a statement: ‘I prefer him/her, I don’t care that he/she. No one can make a mistake,'” she added.
