Drought causes a sharp drop in EU cereal production

Cereal production in European Union (EU) countries decreased by 9 percent last year due to drought.

The European Statistical Office announced the 2022 cereal production data of member countries.

Consequently, the EU-wide cereal harvest decreased by 26.7 million tonnes in 2022 compared to the previous year, declining to 270.9 million tonnes. The decrease in the cereal harvest was about 9 percent.

THE LARGEST PRODUCTION IS IN FRANCE

During this period, the largest cereal production occurred in France with 59.9 million tons. This country was followed by Germany with 43.5 million tons, Poland with 35 million tons, Spain with 19.3 million tons and Romania with 18.9 million tons.

The decline in EU cereal production was largely due to drought.

EU countries harvested 126.7 million tonnes of wheat, 53 million tonnes of corn, 52 million tonnes of barley, 7.8 million tonnes of rye and 7.5 million tonnes of oats in 2022. Production of other cereals was approximately 23.9 million tons. (AA)
