Fruit prices rose 200 percent in one year, breaking eight-year record
Antalya Commodity Exchange (ATB) announced the index on transaction quantities and prices of tomatoes, vegetables and fruits traded in Antalya markets.
Index values related to transaction quantities and prices of tomatoes, vegetables and fruits traded in Antalya markets changed in September 2023 compared to the previous month and the same month of the previous year.
According to the index, although the annual quantity index of vegetables increased by 23.76 percent, the increase in demand played an important role in this above-average price increase. In September, the quantity indices were 23 for tomatoes, 38 for vegetables, and 20 for fruits, and the price indices were 999 for tomatoes, 1,109 for vegetables, and 2,000 for fruits.
RECORD INCREASE IN FRUIT PRICES
While the September indices increased by 20.71 percent in tomatoes compared to the previous month (monthly), they decreased by 5.96 percent in vegetables and 60.83 percent in fruits.
Quantity indices increased by 1.42 percent for tomatoes and 23.76 percent for vegetables compared to the same month last year (annual), while for fruits they decreased by 67.33 percent.
Annual changes in the indices in September indicated a record decrease in the amount of fruits, a record increase in the amount of vegetables, and a below-average decline in tomatoes.
The changes in annual price indices represented an 8-year record increase for fruits and an above-average increase for tomatoes and vegetables.
DECREASE IN QUANTITY CAUSED A RECORD INCREASE IN PRICE
While the tomato price index increased by 85.48 percent year-on-year in September, the 1.42 percent increase in quantity relatively contained the price increase. The annual increase in the vegetable price index was 81.74 percent. Although the annual quantity index of vegetables increased by 23.76 percent, increased demand played an important role in this above-average price increase.
The annual variation of the fruit price index reached a record level of 199.33 percent. The 67.33 percent decrease in the annual transaction amount of the fruit caused a record increase in price.
THE PRICE OF TOMATO BROKE THE 5-YEAR RECORD
Monthly changes in quantity and price indices in September represented a record increase in quantity and a below-average price increase for tomatoes over the past 5 years. Compared with the previous month (monthly), the tomato transaction quantity index increased by 20.71 percent in September, while the transaction price index increased by 11.97 percent monthly.
Compared with the previous month (monthly), the vegetable transaction quantity index showed an extraordinary decrease of 5.96 percent in September, while the transaction price index increased by 19.49 percent monthly. Considering the months of September of the last five years, the vegetable quantity index showed a record decrease and the variation of the price index increased below the average.
Compared with the previous month (monthly), the fruit transaction quantity index showed a record decrease of 60.83 percent in September, while the transaction price index increased by 38.73 percent. Considering the months of September of the last 5 years, the monthly changes were reflected in a record decrease in the fruit quantity index and a record increase in the price index.
