Biden signs bill to prevent government shutdown

US President Joe Biden signed the temporary budget bill that will prevent a government shutdown.

A government shutdown was averted when Biden signed the bill that will provide 45 days of funding to the federal government less than an hour before the end of fiscal year 2023.

The bill was approved today by 335 votes to 91 in the House of Representatives, dominated by Republicans, and approved by the Senate, where Democrats are in the majority, with 88 “yes” votes to 9 “no” votes.

The bill in question will provide funding to federal institutions through November 17, while giving Congress time to reach an agreement on the fiscal year 2024 budget.

‘WE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN IN THIS SITUATION IN THE BEGINNING’

On the other hand, Biden, in his written statement after the approval of the bill in Congress, noted that today the bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate voted in favor of keeping the government open to avoid “an unnecessary crisis that will cause suffering to millions of hard-working Americans.”

Emphasizing that the bill passed ensures that active-duty soldiers continue to be paid, that passengers avoid airport delays, that millions of women and children continue to access vital nutritional aid and much more, Biden said it is about good news for Americans.

Emphasizing that we should not have been in this situation in the first place, Biden said: “Just a few months ago, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and I reached a budget agreement to avoid exactly this kind of crisis.” manufactured. For weeks, hardline Republicans have tried to withdraw from that deal, demanding drastic cuts that would be devastating for millions of Americans. “They failed.” he said.

Noting that although McCarthy and the overwhelming majority of Congress were determined to support Ukraine, there was no new funding in the agreement to ensure the continuation of this support, Biden stated that they would not allow US support for Ukraine to be cut. turned off under any circumstances.

Biden noted that he hopes McCarthy will continue his commitment to the Ukrainian people and ensure the support needed to help Ukraine at this critical time.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen also said in her written statement that she applauded Congress for taking action to prevent a “reckless and unnecessary” government shutdown.

Emphasizing that the country has made significant economic progress over the past two and a half years, Yellen said, “We must work to support our economic progress rather than jeopardize it with dangerous political aggression.” he made the assessment of it. (AA)
