In Europe, 131 kilos of food are wasted per person
Data from the European Statistics Office (Eurostat) revealed that per capita food waste of European Union (EU) citizens increased by 4 kilograms in one year.
Eurostat, which published 2021 data on food waste in EU countries, announced that Europeans’ per capita food waste reached 131 kilograms in 2021.
In 2020, 127 kilograms of food were wasted per person.
TOTAL 58.4 MILLION TONS OF FOOD WASTE
EU countries produced a total of 58.4 million tonnes of food waste.
In 2021, households accounted for 54 percent of food waste, corresponding to 70 kilograms per person. In 2020, this rate was 55 percent, corresponding to 70 kilos.
46 percent of waste occurred in the food supply chain, such as food and beverage product production, restaurants and retailers. (AA, SOZCU)
