Citizens long for figs in the country of fig trees

In Aydın, where the Sarılop fig grows, citizens only see the fig on its branches or on market stalls.

Figs were longed for, one of the most important products of Aydın, described by the famous traveler Evliya Çelebi with the words “Oil flows from its mountains and honey from its plains.”

According to data from the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, a part of the 190 thousand tons of figs produced on approximately 40 thousand hectares are consumed fresh, while 40 thousand tons of the 68 thousand tons of dried fruits are exported to approximately 80 countries.

However, due to high input prices and inflation experienced by producers, the citizens of the fig capital forgot the taste of figs.

In Incirliova, Aydın district named after the fig, where the sarilope type fig is produced, unique in the world for its thin skin and unique aroma, fresh figs are sold for 50 lira per kilo and dried figs for 250 lire. , forcing low-income citizens to see figs at market stalls.

‘I CAN’T HAVE MONEY TO BUY FIGS’

Speaking to SÖZCÜ, a retired citizen said that with a salary of 7,500 lira he had no chance to buy figs and said: “Last year I bought and ate a kilo of figs. This year I didn’t have the opportunity to get it. This year we were able to eat one or two kilos of fresh figs that my friends brought me. But I still don’t have dried figs. I can’t afford to buy figs. “With my salary of 7,500 lira, eating figs is a luxury,” he says.

‘I GAINED A POUND LAST YEAR’

A citizen selling figs in the market answered the question: “Can citizens eat figs in İncirliova?” and he said, “The citizen has lost his way home, where can he eat figs?” While one young woman said that she could only eat figs when she went to pick them, she could not buy them at the market. A woman said into the extended microphone: “We live in İncirliova, but this year we don’t have fig siftah. “We can’t buy it too expensive,” she said.
