United Public Works: Food prices increased 30 percent in the last 3 months

United Public Works released its September “Public Inflation” research. Consequently, monthly food inflation was 5.9 percent and annual food inflation was 107.1 percent.

The investigation included the following findings:

“Annual food price inflation, which rose to 179.3 percent in 2022, maintained a downward trend due to the base effect until June this year. Annual inflation, which slowed to 80.5 percent in June and then rose to 92.2 percent in July, rose above 100 percent again after a three-month lull in August. In September, it was 107.1 percent.

INCREASED BY 30 PERCENT IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS

In September, prices in all spending groups increased compared to the previous year. Although it was summer, the sharp increases in fruit prices drew attention. While prices for bread, rice, flour and bulgur rose by an average of 2 percent in September compared to the previous month, there was a 10.3 percent increase in prices for the meat and fish group.

The increase in meat and fish prices since the beginning of the year has reached almost 110 percent. While prices of milk, dairy products and eggs increased in September by 4.9 percent compared to the previous month, the increase in oil prices was 10.6 percent.

In September, while fruit prices increased by 0.5 percent, vegetable prices increased by an average of 6.6 percent compared to the previous month. While prices of pulses increased by 7.2 percent in September, the upward trend in prices of other processed foods such as tomato paste, olives, honey, tea, salt and similar foods continued with 3.6 percent.

Citizens had to pay 5.9 percent more in September than the previous month to purchase the food basket made up of 64 foods selected according to their current food consumption habits. Food prices increased by 30 percent in total in the last three months (July, August and September).

FOOD PRICES INCREASE BY 70 PERCENT IN 2023

There was a 70 percent increase in food prices in the first nine months of the year.

In September this year, compared to the same month last year, there was a 70 percent increase in the prices of bread, flour, bulgur and pasta, a 137.9 percent increase in the prices of meat and fish and a 61.9 percent increase in the prices of milk and dairy products and eggs.

Oil prices rose 72.4 percent compared to a year ago. Fruit prices increased by 129.8 percent and vegetable prices increased by 227.1 percent. “Prices of pulses increased by 47.1 percent and prices of other foods by 62.1 percent in the last year.” (PHOENIX)
