The Turkish Confederation of Trade Unions (TÜRK-İŞ) announced the hunger and poverty line data for August 2023.

According to the results of the TÜRK-İŞ survey of August 2023, the monthly food expenditure (hunger limit) necessary for a family of four living in Ankara to have a healthy, balanced and adequate diet has increased to 12,198.04 TL.

The total amount of expenses for food and other mandatory monthly expenses for clothing, housing (rent, electricity, water, fuel), transportation, education, health and similar needs (poverty line) is TL 39,733.03 for a single employee . The cost of living increased to TL 15,813.15 per month.

FOOD INFLATION 77 PERCENT

According to TÜRK-İŞ data, the change in “kitchen inflation” was 4.63 per month in August 2023. The annual change rate of food inflation was 77.04 percent.

Since the beginning of the year, the change has been determined at 50.02 percent. The exchange rate according to the twelve-month averages was calculated at 107.89 percent.

INCREASE IN BASIC FOOD PRODUCTS

According to prices based on TÜRK-İŞ calculation and collected directly from the market, the observed change in food products as of August 2023 was as follows according to spending groups:

In one month, milk increased an average of 12 percent, yogurt 14 percent and cheese 26 percent. The market prices of branded milk (private label) reached 21.5 TL/L and cheese 117.5 TL/kg. While the milk feed parity, which is accepted at 1.5, remains at the 1.34 level, the raw milk price is still officially at the TL 11.50 level.

Within a month, fish (crop) and chickpeas were up 4 percent, chicken 7 percent, oilseeds (nuts) and green lentils 10 percent, red lentils and eggs 11 percent. . Each chicken egg cost more than 3.60 TL.

In a month, rice, bulgur and flour were up 3 percent, while semolina and pasta were up slightly. Market brand (private label) pasta prices increased to TL 20/kg. If 200 grams of white bread sold for 6.5 TL in Ankara is calculated, the monthly cost of bread for a family of 4 was 682.5 TL.

In one month, prices rose 24 percent for olive oil, 22 percent for butter, 8 percent for margarine and 5 percent for sunflower oil. The price of branded (private label) sunflower oil in the market reached TL 40/litre and butter TL 220/kg. Due to the rapid increase in domestic prices (approximately 251 TL), olive oil exports were suspended until November 1.

Salt rose 20 percent, jam 15 percent, honey and sugar 13 percent, and tea 3 percent. Although there were no changes in the prices of spices, lime blossom, olives and tomato paste, the price of molasses decreased slightly.
