2023-2024 The countdown to the academic year has begun. As students waited for schools to open, parents found themselves caught up in a new wave of raises. Expenses such as school uniforms, stationery, roads and canteens have increased exponentially. CHP Aydın MP Evrim Karakoz compared a student’s school expenses with last year. In this context, it was revealed that school fees, which cost TL 3,296 last year, increased by 105 percent to TL 6,755 this year. “Parents are looking at the staggering expenses,” Karakoz said, adding: “There have been very high increases in many products and services, from notebooks, pens, bags, shoes, services and canteen costs. Parents cannot find an affordable product in stationers, chain stores or wholesalers. The labels are constantly changing, the products are increasing.”
‘MUST BE FREE’
Karakoz said, “Even children’s education has become a luxury in this country,” adding that the average cost of clothing for a student is at least TL 3,000. Karakoz emphasized that 1,400 TL should be spent on stationery materials, 1,120 TL on food expenses, 1,306 TL on service and transportation expenses. Karaköz said: “Our parents do not have the power or the money to cover the costs of clothing, stationery, transportation and food. The AKP government left the students barefoot and the pockets of the parents empty. VAT rates on all school needs should be reduced. Or school necessities should be distributed to students free of charge,” he said.
