Argentine Minister of Economy travels to the US for agreement with IMF

The Argentine government is trying to negotiate a $44 billion loan program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), while Economy Minister Sergio Massa will travel to Washington next week to seal the deal.

The statement was made by a ministry official.

An anonymous source said Massa is expected to leave for the United States on Tuesday or Wednesday.

FAR RIGHT CANDIDATES ROCK MARKETS

Far-right and ultra-libertarian congressman Javier Milei, who wants to shut down Argentina’s central bank and fully dollarize the economy, entered the first round as a candidate by winning 30 percent of the vote in Sunday’s primary elections.

Following these events, the government reduced the value of the peso by 18 percent and increased interest rates by 21 percentage points to 118 percent.

The first round of the presidential elections in Argentina will be held on October 22. (Reuters)
