Garbage transfer workers prepare for strike in Istanbul

Mahmut Arslan, Chairman of the HAK-İŞ Confederation and Hizmet-İş Union, stated that İSTAÇ AŞ, which is responsible for transferring the garbage collected from Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) districts, to recycling facilities, will will go on strike if their demands are not met.

Arslan, in a statement made by the members of the press, stated that they are conducting a collective agreement process at İSTAÇ AŞ and İSPER, which are affiliated to İBB, such as the Hizmet-İş Union.

Emphasizing that the contract negotiations involve a total of 11,000 members in the two companies, Arslan shared the following information:

“Recently, a contract was signed with the DİSK-affiliated General Employment Union at Boğaziçi Management and Transportation Inc., a subsidiary of IMM. We were also offered to sign under the terms of this contract. We do not accept this. We said: ‘A collective agreement below 25 thousand lire is not sustainable for us.’

The conflict on this issue continues. The mediator’s report will arrive in the next few days, so we have to make a decision to strike. We are on our way to a strike decision. Our members, on the other hand, want us to make a direct strike decision without a strike vote.”

Emphasizing that there are 5,500 contract workers at İSTAÇ AŞ and that these workers are responsible for transferring the garbage collected from the districts to recycling facilities, Arslan said:

“The garbage collected by the district municipalities is collected in 9 solid waste transfer stations belonging to the IMM. Trash here is transported to landfills and recycling facilities by IMM with larger vehicles.

Our friends at İSTAÇ AŞ are carrying out all this critical process. In the event of a strike, the garbage coming from the districts will remain in the transfer areas, and when there are garbage cans in the transfer areas, the garbage will not be collected in the districts or even if they are collected, they will not be collected. be emptied.”

Arslan stated that they wanted to sign the contract without going on strike and said that they demanded to create a salary scale starting from 25,000 lire effective from July 1. (AA)
