The hazelnut harvest has started in the Black Sea

Hazelnut harvesting, which ranks first among Turkey’s important agricultural products, has started in the central Black Sea region.

The hazelnuts planted on the flat lands of the Çarşamba plain are easily harvested thanks to the nets placed in the gardens.

Farmers who enter their orchards in the morning shake the hazelnuts and collect them from the net, then put them in sacks. The collected hazelnuts are placed in tractor boxes and taken to the threshing floor for drying.

Samsun Director of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Sağlam said that the hazelnut harvest has started in Samsun.

Stating that Wednesday is the district with the highest hazelnut production in Turkey, Sağlam said, “Last year, Samsun had a hazelnut harvest of 112,500 tons. 50 thousand tons of this was produced in the Çarşamba district alone. In fact, there is a situation that we do not want on Wednesday, there is hazelnut production on the plain. We want more hazelnuts to be produced in hilly or mountainous areas. However, our producer creates hazelnut orchards in the plains since it is a profitable product. Of course, there are advantages to harvesting hazelnuts on the plain. By laying a net in the garden, the hazelnuts can be collected more easily and comfortably.” saying.

Noting that hazelnuts are a very valuable source of livelihood for the Black Sea region, Sağlam said, “Last year, 112,500 tons of hazelnuts were harvested in an area of 1,200,000 decares, we expect 124,484 tons. harvest this year. We are in second place after Ordu in the production of hazelnuts in Turkey. We shortened the distance between us by 40 thousand tons. The hazelnut harvest in Samsun started on August 12. It will continue until mid-September. Especially between 250-500 altitude, which we call the middle range, the harvest begins on August 12, in the coastal part, on August 19, and when we go to the high part, on August 26. So there’s a very different ecosystem here.” he used the phrase.

‘DO NOT HARVEST EARLY’

Recalling that the hazelnut prices were announced by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Sağlam continued as follows.

“Farmers are satisfied with the prices of hazelnuts. Hazelnut is a very important product in Samsun. It is the livelihood of approximately 35 thousand farmers. In other words, it is an absolute source of income for many of our farmers, especially in the eastern part of Samsun, in the highlands of Ayvacık, Terme, Salipazarı, Çarşamba, Tekkeköy and Canik. It is also a culture. I warn our farmers here. Those who did not come to the harvest should not enter the harvest. The pods turn red, and when they are split open inside, they turn red and wobble. Then they can harvest. Don’t let them harvest before their time. Our Soil Products Office has taken the necessary measures. They will take all the products of our farmer, both wheat and hazelnut, without leaving a single product. Therefore, they should not give credit to what they hear or commercial speech in any other way. Our government has taken all precautions. Our Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Office of Soil Products have prepared hazelnut warehouses. As long as it’s of good quality, as long as it doesn’t have moisture or cracks, they’ll take everything.”

Giving advice to farmers who don’t want to sell their hazelnuts right away, Sağlam said, “Our farmers who don’t want to sell their hazelnuts right away because they don’t need money should pay attention to storage conditions. The warehouses must be ventilated, they must be in places that do not receive precipitation, because mold or deterioration can occur, which we call aflatoxin. It is a nut after all, they can definitely be stored with care.” he said. (AA)
