The number of trips and overnight stays in domestic tourism increased in the first quarter
The Statistical Institute of Turkey announced the National Tourism data for the I. Quarter of 2023 (January – March).
In the first quarter, which consists of January, February and March, 8 million 601 thousand people residing in the country traveled.
The total trips made by travelers with one or more overnight stays within the country increased 14.5 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year and amounted to 10 million 90 thousand trips.
Travelers in this quarter made 74 million 530 thousand overnight stays. The average number of overnight stays was 7.4 nights.
INCREASED EXPENSES
The travel expenses of domestic tourists in the first quarter of 2023 increased by 82.8 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year and amounted to TL 22,271,455,000.
94.5 percent of these expenses were personal expenses with TL 21 billion 47 million 636 thousand, and 5.5 percent were package travel expenses with TL 1 billion 223 million 819 thousand. The average expense per trip was 2 thousand 207 TL.
MOST OF THE MONEY IS SPENT ON FOOD AND DRINK
When looking at the distribution ratios of the types of expenses in total travel expenses this quarter, food and beverage expenses at 35.3 percent, transportation expenses at 32.4 percent, and lodging expenses at 9.8 percent had the highest shares.
When analyzing the rates of change of these types of expenses compared to the same period of the previous year, it was observed that there was an increase of 116.9 percent in food and beverage expenses, 75.8 percent in transportation expenses and 61.6 percent in lodging expenses.
Trips for the purpose of visiting relatives ranked first with 65.8 percent. In terms of travel reasons, “travel, entertainment, vacation” ranked second with 18.4 percent and “health” with 5.9 percent.
MOST STAY AT THE HOME OF FAMILY OR FRIENDS
Those who traveled in this quarter stayed mostly in “friends’ or relatives’ houses” with 58 million 535 thousand overnight stays.
According to types of accommodation, “own house” ranked second in number of overnight stays with 6 million 441 thousand nights, while “hotel” ranked third with 3 million 685 thousand overnight stays.
