Fuel surge raises hazelnut price expectations

Hazelnut growers’ price expectation increased after fuel hikes

The Hazelnut Working Group, made up of AKP deputies from the cities where the hazelnut is produced, visited the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı in his office on July 14 and discussed the problems of the producers.

During the visit, the deputies who delivered the report they prepared on the 2023 hazelnut season to Minister Yumaklı, asked that the TMO purchasing centers be increased and that the price of hazelnuts not be announced below 80 lira.

AKP Giresun deputy Ali Temür said: “We wanted the hazelnut price to not be announced below 80 lira and the number of TMO buying centers to be increased, our expectation is that the hazelnut price announced for at least 80 lire by the end of July.”

Although the 80 lira price set by the deputies was accepted by most producers, the SCT’s fuel increase put farmers in a difficult position.

EXPECTATION INCREASED TO 100 LIRA

According to the decision published in the Official Gazette on the evening of July 15 with the signature of the president and president of the AKP, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan; The SCT, which was 2.52 LT per liter for gasoline, went up to 7.52 TL, and the SCT, which was 2.05 TL for diesel, went up to 7.05 TL. After the increase in the SCT, a liter of diesel exceeded 33 liras, and gasoline stood at 35 liras.

The farmer, who considered the price of the hazelnut at 80 liras adequate, increased his expectation of the price of the hazelnut to 100 liras before the increases.

Atakan Akça, Chairman of the Ordu Altınordu Chamber of Agriculture, said: “The support given to our farmers and producers must be urgently increased after the diesel and gasoline price increases. Otherwise, our farmers and producers will not be able to produce and there will be big problems in the food supply. After this day, at least the price of hazelnuts should be 80 TL, increasing our demand, we say that at least the price of hazelnuts should be 100 TL,” he said.

On the other hand, in Ordu and Giresun, which are among the provinces with the highest hazelnut production, hazelnut orchards were reportedly damaged due to heavy rains and floods that had occurred in recent days, and it was announced that Harvest determination studies continue. In Ordu and Giresun, the daily wage of hazelnut workers was determined at 400-450 lire.
