3 of our universities made the top 500, 3 of them narrowly missed out
Chairman of the Council for Higher Education (YÖK), Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar said that 25 universities from Turkey entered the ‘QS 2024 World Universities’, in which 2,963 universities were evaluated and 1,503 universities were ranked. Middle East Technical University was ranked 336th, Istanbul Technical University was ranked 404th, and Koç University was ranked 431st in the top 500. He stated that Bilkent was ranked 502nd, Boğaziçi was ranked 514th, and Sabancı University was ranked 526th, getting closer to his goal of top 500 universities. He announced that 10 of our universities, including Istanbul, Hacettepe, Ankara and Yıldız Technical Universities, and Manas University of Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, are among the top 1000 universities in the ranking.

Speaking to SÖZCÜ about the results of the world-renowned higher education rating agency QS’s world university rankings 2024, YÖK President Özvar said that Turkey has risen from 22nd to 17th in the world in production of scientific papers. in the last 20 years, and that the number of publications has reached 72 thousand.
Noting that our universities have achieved significant success in “subject-based world rankings” conducted outside of world university rankings, YÖK President Erol Özvar said:
“In the ‘World University Rankings by Subjects’ published in 2023, 27 Turkish university programs were among the top 200 programs in the world. Among these, METU Petroleum Engineering was among the top 10 programs in the world, while ITU Petroleum Engineering was ranked 47th in the same ranking. Gazi University is ranked 27th in the world in the field of “Education”.
OUR PLACE IN THE IMPACT RANKING
The international ranking organization Times Higher Education (THE), which measures the success of universities in achieving the ‘United Nations Sustainable Development Goals’, ranked 1,591 universities from a total of 112 countries/regions. In the World University Impact Ranking 2023, Turkey was among the most represented countries. The YÖK president explained this ranking as follows:
“Istanbul Technical University ranks 58th, while Middle East Technical University and Abdullah Gül University are in the top 100-200; Hacettepe University and Yıldız Technical University ranked in the 200-300 band. The total number of universities in Turkey in the 2023 ranking increased to 79.”
ACADEMIC PERSONAL SUPPORT
Noting that in recent years, YÖK has implemented many new projects to increase the international recognition of our universities, Özvar said:
“The performance of 23 Research Universities within the scope of the Research Oriented Mission Differentiation Project is monitored annually and the results are shared with the public each year. This year 250 million pounds were allocated. Its distribution to universities is also calculated according to 30 indicators. YÖK also provides support to the academic staff.”

Noting that YÖK started “International Research Projects” this year to encourage PhD students and researchers to conduct research with international standards at distinguished universities around the world, Özvar also provided the relevant numbers. The YÖK president explained his goals as follows:
“While I appreciate the achievements of our universities in international rankings, I would like to emphasize that the main objective of universities is to comprehensively improve the quality of their education, training and research. I believe that as long as our universities focus on these goals, they will succeed without relying on institutions and organizations.
