‘National security restriction’ on exports of some metals from China
China has restricted the export of gallium and germanium metals, which are used to make chips and electronic products, for reasons of “national security and protection of interests.”
“In order to protect national security and interests, it has been decided to impose a restriction on the export of gallium and germanium related materials,” China’s Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.
The two metals that have been restricted are used in a wide range of products, including solar panels, lasers, night vision goggles and computer chips.
MEETS 95% OF WORLD PRODUCTION
Due to the restriction, the approval of the relevant authorities is required before exporting gallium and germanium.
The restriction will take effect from August 1.
China, the largest producer of these two elements, accounts for 95 percent of the world’s gallium production and 67 percent of germanium production. (AA)
