No more masks, cosmetic imports explode

Due to the Covid-19 epidemic in Turkey, imports of cosmetic products, which decreased by 43 percent in 2020 to USD 193 million, almost doubled from 2022, when the use of face masks had almost ended.

According to the compilation made from the data of the Turkish Institute of Statistics (TUIK), the use of cosmetic products had decreased considerably due to the effect of social distancing rules such as curfew and the use of masks during the period of the Covid-19.

In 2020, when the measures against the spread of the epidemic were more stringent, imports of cosmetics, including perfumes, eye shadows, lipsticks and facial makeup materials, decreased by 43 percent compared to 2019 and fell to 193 million. dollars, which represents the lowest level of the last 4 years.

The import figures, which began to increase due to the relaxation of the measures taken, reached 270 million dollars in 2021.

With the end of the pandemic and the end of the use of masks, people who do not neglect their care in social life increased their expenses on cosmetics. Imports of cosmetics, which amounted to 409.4 million dollars in 2022, doubled in the period 2020-2022, surpassing the figures of the pre-pandemic period.

The importation of these products amounted to approximately 154 million dollars in the first 4 months of this year.

MORE MONEY spent on perfume

The largest increase in imports of cosmetic products compared to the pandemic period was in perfumes with 176.4 percent, followed by powders with 120.5 percent and lip makeup materials with 106.7 percent.

While perfume imports were $253 million last year, this figure was recorded at $210.5 million in 2019, $91.5 million in 2020, and $166 million in 2021.

Other items that were imported the most were eye makeup materials with 59.7 million dollars and deodorants with 40.8 million dollars.

The import of eye makeup materials, which women frequently use in daily life, was at the level of 51.8 million US dollars before the epidemic. The importation of these materials, which fell to 38.5 million dollars during the Covid-19 period, was close to 60 million dollars last year, but reached 21 million dollars in the January-April period of this year. .

LIPPER IMPORT IS IN THE TOP OF 4 YEARS

While the import of lip makeup materials was 26.1 million dollars in 2019 for the requirement of masks, it decreased to 16 million dollars in 2020 and 2021. The import of lip materials, which registered the peak of the last 4 years with 33.2 million dollars last year, exceeded 14 million dollars in the period January-April of this year.

While imports of powders and blushes fell by almost half in 2020 compared to the previous year, imports of these products rebounded from last year and reached levels of $10.6 million and $5.5 million. , respectively.

While the import of manicure and pedicure materials decreased to 3 million dollars in the period 2020-2021, it increased to 6.5 million dollars in 2022. In the period January-April of this year, imports amounted to $1.1 million.
