10 TL in the garden, 30 TL in the market
The harvest of Napoleon cherry, which is produced on 330 decares in the İslahiye district of Gaziantep, has started. Mehmet Köse, Chairman of the İslahiye Chamber of Agriculture, stated that the cherry harvest was higher than last year, saying, “Our harvest has started. While the first cherries of the season cost around 10 lire in the garden, they find buyers for 30 lire in the markets.
The cherry harvest, which is grown in an area of 330 decares, began in the districts of Kabaklar, İdilli, Hasanlök, Tandır, Yağızlar, Kayabaşı and Koççagiz, located at the foot of the Amanos Mountains.
REDUCED ATTENTION DUE TO EARTHQUAKE
Mehmet Köse, Chairman of the İslahiye Chamber of Agriculture, stated that the first cherry of the season found buyers for 10 lira in the garden and 30 lira in the market, saying, “Our cherry crop, which was planted in an area of 330 decares in our İslahiye district, has started. It’s nice that the performance is higher than last year. The first early cherry of the season costs £10 in the garden, but finds buyers for £30 in the markets.
Köse said that trader interest in the cherry crop, which is still being picked, remained below expectations due to the earthquake in the region, adding: “It is a pleasure that our farmers, who continued production after from the earthquake disaster, experienced, they received the return of their work with the harvest of the product for which they worked despite all this”.
OBJECTIVE CULTIVATE QUALITY PRODUCTS
Koçcagiz slum chief and cherry farmer Bekir Samlı said that the biggest source of income for his slums in the region is cherries and that they send the cherries they harvest at home and abroad.
Samlı said: “Our cherry harvest has started in our neighborhood. I wish our farmers a bountiful and fruitful season. Although consumers prefer our Napoleon type cherry for its quality, flavor and aroma, it costs between 10 and 15 lira wholesale from the garden. Consumers are offered around 30 lira in the markets. The biggest source of income in our neighborhood is the cherry. Our goal is to grow better quality produce without reducing quality,” he said. (DHA)
