The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) announced the labor force statistics for April 2023.

Consequently, according to the results of the Household Workforce Survey; The number of unemployed aged 15 and over increased by 74 thousand people in April 2023 compared to the previous month and reached 3 million 585 thousand people.

The unemployment rate, on the other hand, increased by 0.1 percentage point to 10.2 percent.

While the unemployment rate was 8.1 percent for men, it was estimated to be 14.3 percent for women.

YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT 19.1 PERCENT

The number of employed increased by 521 thousand people in April 2023 compared to the previous month and went to 31 million 610 thousand people, while the employment rate increased 0.8 points to 48.4%. While this rate was 65.9% for men, it was 31.2% for women.

The labor force increased by 594 thousand people in April 2023 compared to the previous month and reached 35 million 195 thousand people, while the labor participation rate increased 0.9 points to 53.9%. While the labor force participation rate was 71.7% for men, it was 36.4% for women.

The unemployment rate of the young population between 15 and 24 years old was 19.1%, with a decrease of 1.2 percentage points compared to the previous month. Unemployment rate in this age group; It was estimated to be 15.7% in men and 25.4% in women.

The effective average weekly working day, corrected for seasonal and calendar effects, of those employed during the reference period fell 0.2 hours compared to the previous month and rose to 44.4 hours in April 2023.

The idle labor force rate, made up of underemployment due to insufficient hours, potential labor force, and unemployed, rose to 23.8% in April 2023, an increase of 1.7 points compared to the previous month. While the combined rate of underemployment due to insufficient hours and the unemployed was 17.1%, the combined rate of the unemployed and potential labor force was estimated at 17.5%.
