Dollar rise for cars and books
The sharp rises in the exchange rate this week led to further increases in many products, from food to books, from new and used vehicles to fuel and bus tickets.
The price of the dollar, which was at the level of 19.60 on May 14, the first round of the elections, exceeded the level of 23.5 as of this week; Euro/TL, on the other hand, broke a record by exceeding 25.5.
The first increase in the exchange rate that citizens felt as of this week occurred in the prices of automobiles. While some brands are starting to raise their prices after the sharp rise in the exchange rate, many will post their new list prices no later than next week.
While food retailers said they will reflect the increases gradually through the end of July, rather than reflect the increases suddenly so as not to attract public backlash, the rate of increase for new books to be published has also become clear. .
12 PERCENT RENT FOR ZERO VEHICLES
Speaking to Sozcu.com.tr, the President of the Federation of Motor Vehicle Dealers (MASFED), Aydın Erkoç, said: “Since 80 percent of the vehicles in Turkey are imported, unfortunately, an increase in the type exchange rate will inevitably increase prices. The foreign price of the vehicle is increasing, and in the case of Turkey, SCT and VAT are also collected at this rate. Therefore, this situation will cause vehicle prices to rise,” he said.
Erkoç said, “Currently, some brands have brought a 5 percent increase to vehicles, in addition to the exchange rate,” saying, “When new vehicle prices increase, second-hand prices also increase.”
According to the assessment made by the president of the Istanbul Motor Vehicle Dealers Association (IMAS), Hayrettin Ertemel, to sozcu.com.tr, many brands increased the prices of their vehicles between 7 and 12 percent from this week, after the strong increase in the exchange rate.
Ertemel said: “Before the elections, there were increases due to the imbalance between supply and demand. Because although there is a shortage of supply, the demand increases as people see cars as an investment vehicle. Although that was not their job, those who bought and sold cars were also effective in this increase. The one-week price increase is due to the exchange rate,” he said.
EXPECTATION OF ‘ABORMAL INCREASE’ IN SECOND-HAND VEHICLES
Speaking to Sozcu.com.tr, the general manager of a global automotive company in Turkey, stated that due to the increase in the exchange rate, the prices of spare parts increased by 12 percent from yesterday, and that the vehicles in your group will increase. by 6 percent as of Monday of next week.
“As the exchange rate increases, car prices will continue to increase,” the official said, adding that price increases on new vehicles will also “abnormally increase” the prices of used vehicles:
“If the restriction on vehicle loans continues, enough vehicles will not be able to be given to the second-hand market. Companies will not be able to renew their vehicles, Rent A Car companies that return with credit will no longer be able to offer their expired second-hand cars and buy new cars. Therefore, the number of used cars will decrease. Since the car is now considered as an investment vehicle, the demand will continue to increase and second-hand prices will rise abnormally.
I expect this disorder in the supply-demand balance to continue until the end of 2024. To stop this, it is necessary to contain inflation, which does not seem possible.
DOLLAR SCALE, ADVANCE PAYMENT IS REQUESTED IN PAPER CHANGE
Speaking to Sozcu.com.tr, Turkish Publishers Association President Kenan Kocatürk said that after the dollar rate rose 7 percent daily and topped 21.5 on Wednesday, paper prices they increased significantly; He said that the product, which is given on credit in the sector, has come to be requested in foreign currency instead of TL.
“On the day of the sharp rise in the exchange rate, I was printing 5,000 24-page children’s books. Saying that the cost of this issue, which we agreed on for 37 thousand TL, suddenly increased to 42 thousand TL, Kocatürk said: “The paper prices are calculated with the exchange rate of that day. The price of paper has increased as much as the increase in the exchange rate, and the stationers demanded the product that they gave deferred both in cash and in foreign currency instead of TL”.
AT LEAST 10 PERCENT INCREASE IN NEW BOOKS
Stating that the increase in the exchange rate increases all costs in the publishing sector and therefore these increases will be reflected in the books, Kocatürk said: “These costs will be reflected in new books, not old editions. . The next increase will not be less than 10 percent. However, I hope that the increase in the exchange rate will stop here, because the fear that it will increase again makes everyone nervous, ”he said.
THE PRICES ON THE MARKET WILL INCREASE GRADUALLY UNTIL THE END OF JULY
According to the information provided by the Board member of the Food Retailers Association, Erdal Tüfekçi, to sozcu.com.tr, new price lists have started to reach the markets due to the rise in the exchange rate, but these hikes will be gradually reflected on the shelves until the end. of July.
Tüfekçi said: “The rise of the dollar by more than 7 percent in one day is a shocking increase, but we do not have the opportunity to reflect the incoming increases all at once. There is also competition. We have to reflect the weekly price change as there is no stock available for fresh products such as white meat. We will reflect these hikes with a smooth transition into overstocked products,” he said.
Tüfekçi affirmed that one of the first products that increased due to the rise in the exchange rate was water, and continued as follows:
“The biggest cost of water is logistics. One of the first products that will be affected by the rise in fuel prices and the increase in packaging costs due to the increase in the exchange rate will be water. Coca-Cola and other beverages will follow in first place.”
ADDITIONAL HOLIDAY VISITS ARE ALSO HIGH
As of today, after the sharp increase in the dollar rate, the price of a liter of gasoline increased by 2.70 lira and the price of a liter of diesel increased by 1.37 lira, and the price increase was reflected in the bomb starting today.
Speaking to Sozcu.com.tr, Turkish Bus Drivers Federation (TOFED) President Birol Özcan said that tickets for Eid al-Adha bus trips have been sold, but noted that If the rising fuel dollar continues, receipts may increase.
Stating that they sent a letter to the ministry from yesterday for additional flights, Özcan said: “The last increase of 2 lira did not cause a new increase. There is no increase for those who purchase tickets for now. However, if a new rise comes and diesel goes up to 25-30 lira, additional plane tickets will also increase, ”he said.
With tonight’s rise, the price of a liter of gasoline has increased to approximately TL 23.99 in Istanbul, TL 24.35 in Ankara and TL 24.38 in Izmir; The price per liter of diesel fuel increased to approximately TL 22.11 in Istanbul, TL 22.50 in Ankara and TL 22.52 in Izmir.
