US jobless claims exceed expectations

In the week ending June 3, US jobless claims came in at 261,000, above expectations.

According to seasonally adjusted data announced by the US Department of Labor, the number of claims, previously announced at 232,000 for the week of May 27, has been revised to 233,000.

Economists polled by Reuters estimated claims for jobless benefits at 235,000.

DECREASED TO LEVEL 1,757 MILLION

The four-week average of US jobless claims, which is seen as a better indicator of US labor market trends, rose to 237,250.

The total number of people receiving unemployment benefits in the US dropped to 1.757 million in the week of May 27. (Reuters)
