‘Entrepreneurs often sound the alarm too late in shame’ Related articles

In 2022, 3500 business owners reported to debt assistance. Almost 60% more than in 2021. The average debt in 2022 was around 75,000 euros. According to Marco Florijn, president of the debt relief association NVVK, the effects of the corona crisis are the main culprits.

The effects of the corona virus are only now visible and it often takes a while before it becomes clear how many entrepreneurs have been affected. Furthermore, many entrepreneurs do not dare to say they have debts, for example because they are ashamed or unable to find a solution, says the president. This is why it often takes some time for interested companies to seek help from debt counseling. ‘This is a feature of entrepreneurs, who still see opportunity or hope everywhere. At the same time, people are also ashamed. This applies to both entrepreneurs and people who are not entrepreneurs. This is something we’re trying to fix across all types of campaigns. But the fact remains that people find it difficult,’ says Florijn.

According to Florijn, it is important that people turn to debt counseling earlier in the future, “because then we can also help them with light measures.” Furthermore, in future entrepreneurs are better off contacting the municipality with questions, “for example, to get involved in a reclamation project or for contacts at the Tax and Customs Administration”.

A small improvement

But there is also a light at the end of the tunnel. ‘At the same time, we also see that many more municipalities are helping businesses. In the past, we’ve seen municipalities actually say they can’t help companies if they report,’ says Florijn. The taboo is also slowly disappearing. ‘During the corona virus there have been several campaigns by entrepreneurs who have also invited other entrepreneurs to seek help. Now you can see that this has an effect,’ says Florijn.
