The rate of increase in rents in the districts where refugees live in Istanbul is staggering
The 5-year rent change in Istanbul districts where asylum seekers live intensively was compared.
When comparing rental prices for April 2019 and April 2023, the highest increase was experienced in Kağıthane with 807 percent.
Kağıthane is followed by Arnavutköy with 794 percent, Başakşehir with 779 percent and Gaziosmanpaşa with 777 percent.
It has been observed that the rents, which in April 2019 were in the range of 1000-3 thousand, in the districts where the refugees are densely populated, are today in the range of 8 thousand -19 thousand TL.
INCREASED 654 PERCENT IN 5 YEARS
Sharing the comparative data on his social media account, IMM Deputy Secretary General Dr. Buğra Gökce made the following assessment:
“In our 15 districts of Istanbul, where refugees are densely populated, the rate of increase in housing rents in 5 years is 654 percent on average. In 15 districts, rents increased from 1,640 lira to 12,111 lira on average There are steps to follow.
In addition to the production of social housing, macroeconomic policies must be streamlined and housing sales to foreigners halted until equilibrium is reached. We need the refugees to return to their countries. The increase in the refugee population also destabilizes the housing market.”
