The EU wants to frustrate those fleeing sanctions
The European Union (EU) wants to fill the legal loopholes in sanctions and prevent existing restrictions from being circumvented.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the EU Commission, spoke at the Ukraine session of the G7 Leaders’ Summit held in Hiroshima, Japan.
“We must continue to provide economic and financial support to Ukraine.” Von der Leyen said that the coordination platform established by the G7 countries helped Ukraine to close the 2023 budget deficit and that they needed to reach an agreement to provide stable financial support to Ukraine after 2023.
‘TO CUT OFF THE FLOW OF VITAL REVENUES…’
Von der Leyen noted that Russia is paying a “high price” for its aggression, noting that the EU annually exports 50 billion euros to the country and 90 billion euros in order to deprive Russia of advanced goods and technology and cut off the access to the country. declared vital revenue streams prohibiting imports.
“Our main sanctions are being circumvented more and more,” von der Leyen said, noting that there is extraordinary commercial data and evidence on this issue.
Von der Leyen claimed that high-tech exports to third countries, from microprocessors and sensors for Russian cruise missiles to chips in military communication devices, went to Russia and were used against Ukraine in the war. Therefore, the new EU measures will target operators in other countries to circumvent or avoid sanctions,” he said.
EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR AMMUNITION FOR UKRAINE
Emphasizing that the war in Ukraine must end justly, von der Leyen said: “Peace negotiations that make the aggressor and the victim equal must be rejected. We must support efforts to increase support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s peace formula.”
Von der Leyen called on Ukraine to urgently supply the necessary weapons and ammunition, referring to the Commission’s proposed plan for ammunition production, and reiterated his commitment to provide further financial support for additional production.
Zelensky’s 10-point peace plan includes restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity, complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian soil, and restoration of Ukraine’s borders.
The leaders of the US, France, England, Germany, Canada and Italy attend the G7 summit hosted by Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.
In addition to the G7 countries, the EU, Indonesia, India, South Korea, Australia and Vietnam are also participating in the summit. (AA)
