The world’s largest lithium producer, the American Albemarle, is looking for a location in Europe to build a processing plant, the Netherlands is on the shortlist. The FD writes this based on conversations with Albemarle’s VP of Sustainability, Mark de Boer. The investment would be worth one billion euros.
Albemarle says the decision will be made within months. The arrival of the factory fits well with EU raw materials policy in the context of greater strategic autonomy. Lithium is an essential raw material for the production of electric car batteries.

Albemarle already has another location in the Netherlands, albeit not for lithium production. Since 2004, the company has owned a chemical plant in Amsterdam-Noord where raw materials for other chemical companies and refineries, so-called catalysts, are produced. De Boer says he can say little about possible locations, a possible candidate is the port of Rotterdam.
