In total, some 84,000 people stopped working due to retirement last year, 12% fewer than a year earlier. That retirement age that year was 66 years 7 months, but the average age at which people retired was 65 years 8 months. That is 3 months more than in 2021 and the same average age as in 2020.

Statistics Netherlands does not know why more than a tenth of fewer people have retired. The statistics office notes that many employees retired in the corona years 2020 and 2021. But there is a lack of data to determine the effect of the corona crisis on the number of retirees.

Statistics Netherlands also asked employees aged 45-65 at what age they would like to retire. This resulted in an age of 65 years and 1 month. According to Statistics Netherlands, this is the highest age since measurements began, dating back to 2014, when people indicated they wanted to continue working until the age of 64 years and 3 months.
