ISIG has announced the ‘Labor Murder Report’ for the first 4 months of this year. In the report, which specified that 585 workers lost their lives in occupational homicides in the first four months of the year, it was indicated that this figure was 31,131 during the years in which the AKP was in power. According to the report, the number of workers killed per year is as follows:
146 workers in the last two months of 2002, 811 workers in 2003, 843 workers in 2004, 1,096 workers in 2005, 1,601 workers in 2006, 1,044 workers in 2007, 866 workers in 2008, 1,171 workers in 2009, 1,454 workers in 2010, 2011 1710 workers in 2012, 878 workers in 2012, 1235 workers in 2013, 1886 workers in 2014, 1730 workers in 2015, 1970 workers in 2016, 2006 workers in 2017, 1923 workers in 2018, 1736 workers in 2019, 2427 workers in 2020 , 2021 In 2016, 2,170 workers, 1,843 workers in 2022, and 585 workers in the first four months of 2023 lost their lives in occupational homicides.
“REFLECTION ON THE REDUCED PRESS”
ISIG also shared the data for the first four months of 2023. According to ISIG, 585 workers lost their lives in occupational homicides in the first four months of this year, while the number of workers who died in occupational homicides last April was 122. In the İSİG report, it was noted that the occupational killings were not reflected in the press, and the following was stated:
“68 percent of the national press; According to the information we received from co-workers, family members, occupational safety technicians, occupational doctors, unions, and the local press, 32 percent of them were determined in the first four months of 2023 (120 in January, 213 in February , 130 in March, April) At least 585 workers (including 122 in Turkey) lost their lives… In other words, at least 5 workers lost their lives in occupational homicides every day this year. We say the least because what we have detected is reflected in the press or reported to us. On the one hand, it is almost impossible to get to the information of our colleagues that we lost in the earthquake zone (we have reached the information of only 110 dead workers so far). On the other hand, due to the earthquake agenda, the reflection of workplace murders in other cities in the press has decreased”.
CAUSES OF BUSINESS MURDER
The report included the following determinations as to the causes of the occupational homicides:
- “An important cause of occupational homicides are traffic and service accidents. However, these deaths are viewed as traffic accidents, not workplace murders. Drivers work long hours and almost irreversibly in poorly maintained old vehicles, steering wheels on roads without lighting or road regulation. Again, especially in April, many workers lost their lives as a result of service accidents.
- We will always see the effect of the earthquake on our charts in 2023. According to official statements, we have lost at least 50 thousand people in the Maraş earthquakes. While we were working during the earthquake or for educational activity assignment reasons, 110 workers died in the region so far (42 accommodation workers, 32 chemical workers, 27 health workers, 3 transportation workers, 1 agriculture worker , 1 textile worker, 1 trade worker, 1 worker in the region, metal worker, 1 construction worker and 1 security worker). We do not assess workers who went to the region after the earthquake or died while working in buildings damaged in the earthquake.
- The agricultural sector ranks first in deaths from crushing and dents. We consider the rollover of the tractor while working in the field in this context. Crushing is the number one cause of death in the industry, especially in metals and mines. On the other hand, crushes and dents are the second leading cause of death in construction.
- In the case of falls from height, there are constructions in which more than half of the deaths occur first. However, all of these deaths can be prevented with proper scaffolding, guardrails, safety nets, and equipment.
- With the excessive, intense and excessive work that characterizes precarious work, housing, food, transportation, etc. from the workers. living conditions especially cause heart attacks and cerebral hemorrhages”. (PHOENIX)
