The number of trips and overnight stays in domestic tourism decreases in 2022

Turkish Statistical Institute, 2022 IV. Quarterly data (October-December) for domestic tourism is announced.

Constituted for the months of October, November and December, IV. In the quarter, 7 million 614 thousand people residing in the country traveled. The total trips made by travelers with one or more overnight stays within the country decreased 18.6 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year and amounted to 8 million 719 thousand trips. Travelers in this quarter made 59 million 561 thousand overnight stays. The average number of overnight stays was 6.8 nights.

When evaluated annually, the total number of trips in 2022 decreased 0.8 percent compared to the previous year and amounted to 52 million 327 thousand. The total number of overnight stays made by travelers this year decreased by 7 percent compared to the previous year and amounted to 426 million 579 thousand. The average number of overnight stays was 8.2 nights.

TRAVEL EXPENSES RISE

Travel expenses of domestic tourists in the IV of 2022. In the third quarter of the year, it increased by 65.8 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year and amounted to 19 thousand 58 million 768 thousand TL.

93.1 percent of these expenses were personal expenses with TL 17.740 million 769 thousand, and 6.9 percent were combined travel expenses with TL 1 billion 317 million 999 thousand. The average cost per trip was TL 2,186.

This year, the total travel expenses incurred on domestic travel increased by 96.7 percent compared to the previous year and reached TL 114,317,183,000. 90.6 percent of these expenses were personal expenses with 103 thousand 543 million 55 thousand TL, and 9.4 percent were combined travel expenses with 10 billion 774 million 129 thousand TL. The average expense per trip was 2,185 TL.

MORE TRAVELERS TO VISIT THE FAMILY

In terms of travel reasons, “travel, entertainment, vacation” ranked second with 22.1 percent and “health” with 5.3 percent.

When the reasons for the trips are evaluated annually, “visiting relatives” ranks first with 59.4 percent, “travel, entertainment, vacations” with 31.1 percent and “health” with 3.8 percent.

MOST TRAVELERS STAY AT THE HOMES OF FRIENDS OR FAMILY

Travelers this quarter stayed mostly in “friends or relatives’ houses” with 43 million 787 thousand overnight stays. According to types of accommodation, “own house” ranked second in number of overnight stays with 7 million 151 thousand nights, while “hotel” ranked third with 4 million 465 thousand overnight stays.

When the types of accommodation are evaluated annually, travelers stayed mostly in “friends or relatives’ houses” with 288 million 905 thousand overnight stays. While “own house” ranked second with 73 million 478 thousand overnight stays, “hotel” ranked third with 34 million 588 thousand overnight stays.
