Macron’s dollar statement: we must reduce addiction
French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking on the plane after his three-day visit to China, said Europe must reduce its dependence on the US and Europe must avoid becoming part of the China-China Taiwan tension. USA
Responding to questions from Politico and French journalists, Macron made important statements on relations between Europe and the United States.
Macron described the biggest risk facing Europe as “getting caught up in crises that are not ours and that prevent Europe from building its strategic autonomy.”
Describing the European Union’s steps in foreign policy as a paradox, Macron said: “We think that we are only followers of the United States. The question that Europeans must answer is… Is it in our interest to accelerate (a crisis) in Taiwan? No. Worse still, we Europeans should do the same and follow the lead of the US agenda and China’s overreaction.

Macron also argued that Europe has increased its dependence on the United States for arms and energy and should now focus on developing European defense industries.
He also suggested that Europe should reduce its reliance on the “cross-border US dollar,” which is one of the key policy goals of both Moscow and Beijing.
“If tensions rise between the two superpowers…we won’t have the time or resources to finance our strategic autonomy and we will become dependent,” Macron said.
