EU requests repayment of loan granted to Alitalia

The European Union (EU) decided that the 400 million euro loan that Italy granted to the flag carrier Alitalia in 2019 was against the rules and had to be repaid.

The EU Commission made a statement on the decision taken regarding the support provided by Italy to the aviation sector.

In the statement, it was noted that the 400 million euro loan that Italy provided to Alitalia in 2019 is contrary to the EU’s public support rules, and that Italy should recover this loan and interest from Alitalia.

A LOAN OF 900 MILLION EUROS WAS REQUESTED IN 2017

The EU had previously decided to repay Alitalia’s loans totaling 900 million euros in 2017.

Alitalia, which had financial problems for many years and was in a difficult situation due to Covid-19, decided to completely stop flights in 2021. ITA, which replaced Alitalia, took over and started regular flights. (AA)
