Canada bans aluminum and steel imports from Russia

Canada has banned the import of Russian steel and aluminum products under sanctions aimed at promoting regime change in Russia at war with Ukraine.

At a press conference, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said that for the first time the idea of sanctions against Russia was aimed at ending the administration of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and said that the isolation against Moscow must be economic, political and diplomatic.

Joly stressed that the purpose of the ban, which covers aluminum and steel products, is to weaken Russia’s ability to attack Ukraine, saying they want Putin’s administration to be held to account.

“We are doing everything possible to cut or limit the revenue that Putin uses to finance his barbaric and illegal invasion of Ukraine,” Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said in a statement. she said.

TOTAL OF 3.6 BILLION DOLLARS IN SUPPORT TO UKRAINE

Canada has provided $3.62 billion in aid to Ukraine, including money, military supplies and other aid, since the war began last year.

Canada imported $201 million worth of aluminum and steel products from Russia in 2021, according to official trade figures. (AA)
