Women’s labor force participation rate is less than half that of men

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) published the results of the 2022 study on Women with Statistics.

According to the results of the household active population survey, the labor participation rate of those over 15 years of age in 2021 was 51.4%. This rate was 32.8 percent for women and 70.3 percent for men.

When the labor participation rate is analyzed by educational level, it is observed that the higher the educational level of women, the more they participate in the labor force.

AS EDUCATION INCREASES, THE LABOR PARTICIPATION RATE INCREASES

The labor force participation rate for illiterate women is 12.8 percent, the labor force participation rate for women with less than secondary education is 25.3 percent, the labor force participation rate for the labor force of female high school graduates is 32.5 percent, the labor force participation rate of females with vocational or technical bachelors is 38 percent, has been 5.

While the labor force participation rate for female higher education graduates was 67.6 percent, this rate was 84.6 percent for males.

WOMEN IN EMPLOYMENT

In 2021, the employed rate of 15 years and over was 45.2 percent. This rate was 28 percent for women and 62.8 percent for men.

The highest female employment rate was 36.8 per cent in Trabzon, Ordu, Giresun, Rize, Artvin and Gümüşhane regions. This region was followed by the Kastamonu, Çankırı and Sinop regions with 35.6 percent, and the Samsun, Tokat, Çorum and Amasya regions with 33.8 percent.

The lowest female employment rate was 14.5 per cent in the Mardin, Batman, Şırnak and Siirt regions. This region was followed by Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır with 15.9 percent, Van, Muş, Bitlis and Hakkari with 19.6 percent.

The share of part-time workers in employment was 9.9 percent in 2021. This rate was 16.4 percent for women and 7 percent for men.

THE EMPLOYMENT RATE OF WOMEN WITH CHILDREN DECREASES

According to the results of the household labor force survey, the employment rate of persons in the 25-49 age group with children under 3 years of age at home was 59.8 percent in 2014 and 58.9 percent in 2021.

When this relationship is analyzed by gender, it is observed that the employment rate of women in the 25-49 age group with children under 3 years of age at home in 2021 is 26.1%, while the rate employment of men is 89.1%.

While the rate of women in senior and middle management positions in companies was 14.4% in 2012, it rose to 20.7% in 2021.
