Corrosion destroys its carrying capacity

In this context, the Regulation on Hydraulic Insulation of Buildings, which came into force 5 years ago to increase the reliability of homes, has also made waterproofing mandatory to prevent corrosion. However, it has been revealed that most of the homes built from the date of entry into force of the regulations do not have thermal insulation.

THE BUILDING CAN COOL

Emrullah Eruslu, President of the Association of Heat, Water and Fire Insulators (İZODER), who provided information on the effects of corrosion, said: “According to investigations; reveals that equipment exposed to water loses 50 percent of its load capacity at the end of 5 years, 90 percent at the end of 15 years, and completely at the end of 24 years. In other words, even without an earthquake or external factors, a structure collapses with reinforcement corrosion alone. In examinations carried out after the Marmara earthquake, corrosion was detected in 64 percent of 55,651 residences and workplaces, of which 79 percent were damaged. Corrosion is such a critical problem.”

It represents 2% of the building park.

The Building Waterproofing Regulation, of vital importance for buildings to survive destructive factors such as earthquakes, came into force on June 1, 2018. It is stated that the number of buildings built after the mentioned date and that had mandatory waterproofing it constitutes only 1.5-2 percent of the total stock of buildings. In this context, the figures reveal the problem of the number of safe houses.
