Meat prices doubled in Europe
As Turkey tries to heal the wounds of the earthquake, the monthly increases increase the livelihood of low-income citizens. The price of carcass meat in euros has increased from 4 euros to 9 euros in the last year. Saying that the price increases will continue, CHP Manisa MP Bekir Başevirgen assessed the continued increases.

Başevirgen said: “The price of beef carcass, whose weight was around TL 100 on the free market in November 2022, increased to TL 170 and lamb carcass to TL 160 from February 23 to a breakneck pace. While the meat market was almost upside down with record price increases, the Meat and Dairy Institution (ESK) did not raise the purchase price of the carcass, keeping it constant at 116 lira. At neighborhood butcher shops, the weight of ground beef went up to 220 TL, and the weight of cubed meat went up to 250 TL. Even in markets that belong to Tarım Kredi, prices are only 10 percent off. Meat and Dairy Institution, on the other hand, sells minced meat for 89TL and cubed meat for 99TL at the expense of tax. Our citizens, who cannot afford to buy meat in butcher shops and markets, form long queues in front of the IHC in the early hours of the morning.
Stating that Turkey needs approximately 1.5 million tons of beef per year, Başevirgen stated that around 5.5 million head of cattle must be slaughtered to meet this need. “While we struggle to meet our energy needs as a country, the fact that our country does not have euros or dollars to import meat is not treason, what is?” Başevirgen said: “We warn the government once again, importation is definitely not a solution. Importing meat means signing the death sentence of the national producer”.

CHP Manisa deputy Bekir Başevirgen said: “The price of carcass meat, which was around 60 TL in 2022, was around 4 euros. Today, its price is around 170 TL/Kg, or 9 euros, in free markets. Looking at the EU average, the price of carcass meat of the same quality is 4.42 euros. Since our consumption of red meat, which is 12 kilos per person per year, has dropped to 5 kilos, there is either a serious decrease in production or an excessive increase in our production costs.
‘The meat and milk crisis will get worse’
Referring to the importance of agriculture and livestock in the earthquake-affected provinces, CHP Manisa Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Affairs Commission Deputy Member Bekir Başevirgen said, “We have more than 2 million head of cattle and more than 10 million sheep and goats. We are talking about almost 15 percent of our animal existence. In addition to dead farm animals, a large number of crippled cows that cannot be cared for or fed are sent to slaughter below breeding value.
