EBSO President: Production did not stop in the earthquake zone, but it is not at the desired level
The magnitude 7.7 earthquakes in the Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş and 7.6 in the Elbistan district, which caused destruction in 11 provinces, also affected industrial facilities in the region.
Ender Yorgancılar, the senior adviser to the Chairman of the Aegean Region Chamber of Industry (EBSO) and the Chairman of the Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB), Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, who conducted inspections in the area of the earthquake and gave information on the state of industrial facilities, said that production did not stop, but it was not at the desired level.
Yorgancılar said: “In the meetings we had with the heads of the chambers in the industrial zones, it was stated that there was not much damage to the industrial facilities. There is great destruction in the main residences. An important issue here is that our friends who work in industrial facilities have passed away or their relatives have passed away. Migration is also happening. There is a difficult process in that sense. It is too early to talk about production in industrial facilities. First life, then life. There are those who could not find his body. First, debris is removed. We cannot say that ‘production has stopped’ in the region, the industrial facilities are working. However, it is not at the desired level, ”he said.
‘IF SUCH AN EARTHQUAKE WERE IN ISTANBUL…’
After two major earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, Yorgancılar spoke about scientists’ suggestions to move major industrial facilities located in earthquake zones such as Istanbul and İzmir to regions with less earthquake risk, continuing as follows:
“I don’t know how correct it is to talk about this now. Because we talk about earthquakes when there is an earthquake. After some time after the earthquake, everyone forgets about each other.
It was not revealed today that there were failures in Istanbul and Izmir. For years we have been expressing that urban transformation should not involve multi-storey buildings, and if it is, it should be done in accordance with the modern construction system of the moment.
If there is such an earthquake in Istanbul, Istanbul looks at 80 provinces, but how do 80 provinces look at Istanbul? We don’t know. If such an earthquake occurs in Istanbul, it will be very difficult for us to meet. I am working on this issue. We’ll send it to all our friends when it’s ready.” (DHA)
