Electric car maker Lightyear can still continue with production of the new budget model, the Lightyear 2. Helmond’s company was initially largely bankrupt, but is now restarting. Together with loyal investors, 8 million euros were raised in one day, which according to Lightyear is enough.
A group of 225 private investors, led by Amsterdam entrepreneur Arnoud Aalbersberg, has made the restart of the solar carmaker possible. In addition to the 8 million euros already received, the group hopes to raise another 40-50 million euros for the further development of the Lightyear 2. “We want to have a driving prototype within eighteen months,” Aalbersberg told Eindhovens Dagblad. .

Thanks to the restart, approximately one hundred of the more than 600 jobs will be kept for the Helmond company. The Lightyear 2 is to be developed with the remaining employees. It will be a car “without bells and whistles,” according to Aalbersberg, but “retaining the unique properties of an electric car powered by solar energy.”
