More than half of the houses in the earthquake zone did not have insurance

While the number of residences in 10 provinces affected by the earthquakes centered on Kahramanmaraş reached 2,175,000, 48.37 percent of these buildings had earthquake insurance.

The Natural Disaster Insurance Institution (DASK), which offers the state as a guarantee, insures houses against earthquakes and disasters such as fires, explosions, landslides, and tsunamis directly caused by the earthquake.

Since the implementation of the Compulsory Earthquake Insurance on September 27, 2000, both the institutions and the insurance companies have organized numerous campaigns to raise awareness in society about insurance. Efforts continue to increase the insurance rate to the desired level.

According to the information compiled by the AA correspondent from TCIP data, 55.4% of 20 million 32 thousand homes in Turkey, that is to say 11 million 96 thousand 931, have Compulsory Earthquake Insurance. In other words, 44.6% of homes do not have earthquake insurance.

MORE THAN HALF WERE UNINSURED

Compulsory Earthquake Insurance re-emerged after the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş.

Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum, in a statement last night, said that 41,791 buildings in 10 provinces affected by the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş were determined to be destroyed, immediately demolished or severely damaged.

According to information compiled from TCIP data, before the earthquake there were a total of 2,175,000 homes in the 10 provinces in question. Although 48.37 percent (1 million 52 thousand 245) of these houses have insurance against earthquakes, it is observed that more than half of them do not have insurance. The uninsured housing rate is 51.63 percent (1 million 122 thousand 755).

THE HIGHEST RATE IS IN GAZIANTEP

Among the provinces in question, Gaziantep had the highest insurance rate at 64.1 percent. 217 thousand 319 of 339 thousand homes in the city were insured.

Gaziantep was followed by Kilis with 59.2 percent, Kahramanmaraş with 53.3 percent, Şanlıurfa with 52.4 percent and Malatya with 51.8 percent.

The insurance rate was 46.1% in Adana, 44.4% in Adıyaman, 42.5% in Osmaniye, 39.8% in Hatay, one of the cities most affected by the earthquake, and 33 .9% in Diyarbakir. It should be noted that two out of three residences in Diyarbakır are not insured.

The amount of production of insurance policies against earthquakes in these cities was 187 million 67.2 thousand liras.

A THIRD OF THE HOUSES INSURED WERE BUILT BEFORE 1999

Minister Murat Kurum said: “When you look at the houses built in this huge disaster we are experiencing today, we see that 95 percent of the buildings destroyed were structures before 1999-2000.” he had used the phrase.

According to TCIP data, it is noted that only 3.85 percent of earthquake-insured houses were built in 1975 and earlier, and 27.82 percent of them were buildings dated 1976-1999. In other words, 31.67 percent of the insured houses belong to 1999 and before.

The insurance rate for residences in the 10 earthquake-affected provinces in Kahramanmaraş was as follows:
