“Who will cover the damage caused by the Istanbul airport?”

Turkish Airlines announced that a total of 238 flights were canceled on February 5-6 (morning and Monday) due to expected weather conditions in Istanbul. The following statements were used in the statement made by the THY Press Office:

“Due to the expected snowfall in Istanbul, flights were canceled at the Istanbul airport on February 5 and 6, according to the decision of MADKOM. 238 flights to and from Istanbul airport were cancelled. 72 of these are domestic flights and 166 are international flights. Due to the operation, the number of cancellations is likely to increase.”

Following this statement, despite all the warnings from experts, criticism of the construction of an airport in one of the most challenging parts of Istanbul in terms of weather conditions arose again.

Oktay Erdağı, former Deputy Director General of Civil Aviation, made the following determinations and assessments:

“Each THY plane flies three legs on average every day, that is, it travels to and from three different cities. Almost all of these are carried out from the Istanbul airport. In other words, we need to multiply 238 flights by three… This means 614 flights.

In other words, THY’s loss from these cancellations will average $35 million. So who is responsible or responsible for this? Is there any explanation for hastily tearing up the two runways at Atatürk airport and building a hospital complex and a public garden?
