Drought crisis in the fields: the loss can exceed 40 percent

CHP Niğde MP Ömer Fethi Gürer surveyed fields in Niğde’s Hasaköy village, where wheat could not get out of the ground due to lack of rain and snow despite the last week of January.

Wheat farmer Rasim Yücel said that because there was no snow or rain, the drought had a negative impact on the wheat fields. Yücel, who said that the seeds that they brought together with the soil 2-3 months ago, should rise to the surface of the soil at least 4 fingers in size this season, stated that the seed did not rise to the surface as a product.

Expressing that this negativity could cause a yield loss of up to 40 percent, Yücel said: “Under normal conditions, if there was no drought, 700-800 kilograms of yield could be obtained per decar from this field. However, under the best conditions, there will be a 40 percent loss of efficiency,” he said.

‘EVEN ON IRRIGATED FIELDS, PRODUCTION WILL BE LOW’

Yücel, who showed Gürer the wheat field adjacent to the rainfed crop field and irrigated with well water drawn from the ground, said: “Even if this field is irrigated, the yield will still be very low. The plant did not grow at the expected level. When electricity bills rise and the farmer uses water as much as his income, proper irrigation cannot be done.”

‘IRRIGATION WATER IS 250 LIRA’

Noting that the irrigation water fee is high, Yücel said: “We irrigate for 250 lira per hour. If we water for 4 hours, we have to pay 1000 lira. When we water a couple of times, we have already invested the profit that we will get from here in water money, ”he said.

‘THE TARSİM BUSINESS CONTINUES ON SLOPE’

Farmers who complained to Gürer, who also met farmers in coffee shops, said that farmers registered with ÇKS could insure their products by paying a fee to TARSİM, however, while TARSİM paid the damage fee, the business of payment went uphill under various excuses.

Gürer asserted that AKP governments have always ignored warnings about drought for years, saying, “Although problems related to drought are discussed every year, the AKP has not made any serious attempt to solve the problem.”

‘SUPPORT FOR THE SECOND PRODUCT’

Mentioning that the negativities caused by the drought were clearly manifested, Gürer stressed that at least the officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry should examine the fields with drought-related problems and support and guide farmers for planting second crops in these lands.

‘THE POWER HAS NO WATER POLICY’

gurer said:

“The seed was sown in the ground last November and December. The seed should have come to light and be evident. In cultivated fields, the seed could not penetrate the soil. The government does not have a water policy.

Aladağlar’s water flows into the Mediterranean. The direction of water resources flowing into the Black Sea and the Mediterranean should be turned towards the Anatolian lands. It is seen that water will become a major problem in the future. Water planning must be prepared quickly and thoroughly by experts who know the problem.

What will the ministry do for the drought? You need to explain short-term and long-term policies and put them into practice. The damage done to agriculture is great by those who try to silence us with the perception that in other countries there is no problem pretending that there is a problem.
