TURKEY COMES AFTER CHINA
Salih Çelik, General Manager of Livestock, said that producers, consumers and even public staff can now access all the up-to-date information on beekeeping from a single digital medium.
Stating that the Turkey Beekeeping Map will be of great benefit to the country, Çelik stated that they will integrate it into the “Agriculture in my pocket” app in the future.
Çelik said: “(I want to eat healthy, I want to buy a Geven honey with a geographical indication) you will be able to see in which provinces it is produced by looking at this map. There are even details of GIs from the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. There is nothing that makes people doubt, ”he said.
Stating that according to UN Food and Agriculture Organization data, Turkey ranks second after China in terms of colony presence and honey production as of 2020, Çelik said that last year produced 96 thousand tons of honey in the country, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute.
‘WE EXPECT MORE THAN 100 THOUSAND TONS OF HONEY PRODUCTION’
Çelik stated that the seasonal conditions were going very well this year and said:
“Although it has not yet been clarified, we expect a honey production of more than 100,000 tons.
In the 11 months of 2022, 16 thousand tons of honey were exported for a value of 41.5 million dollars.
When we embed this app on the Ministry’s website and the Agriculture Pocket app, you will be able to see it all over the world. ‘This honey is produced in Turkey, let’s get it from here.’ They can say. This will be an important inventory for our producers to sell their products much more easily.
Our goal is to increase honey production by including the study of honey forests on this map. Thus, we will have more voice in the world”.
Emphasizing that it is important to carry out breeding studies to increase production, Çelik stated that there is Gene and Training Center for Caucasus Bee Production in Ardahan, Beekeeping Research Institute in Ordu and Agricultural Research Institute of the Aegean in İzmir.
Stating that they are working together with the said institutes to improve breed reproduction, Çelik said: “We give the bees we get to whatever region they are adapted to. Our goal is to increase production by increasing the number of bees.” (AA)
