Critical day for the minimum wage

The last meeting of the Minimum Wage Determination Commission, which aims to determine the minimum wage for 2023 with a joint decision by the employer and the government, will begin today at 2:00 p.m.

The first meeting of the commission was held on December 7 and the second on December 14. For the third meeting, the date of December 21 was initially set, but the date was brought up to today.

In the negotiations, the employers’ side is represented by the Turkish Employers’ Trade Union Confederation (TİSK), and the workers’ side is represented by the Turkish Trade Union Confederation (Türk-İş) government and the Minister of Labor Vedat Bilgin.

TÜRK-İŞ RECALLED THE HUNGER LIMIT OF 7 thousand 785 TL

The minimum wage was set at 4,253 TL net for 2022, and in the middle of the year, it was increased again to approximately 5,500 TL. In addition, from the beginning of 2022, the stamp duty on the minimum wage and the income tax for all employees up to the minimum wage were abolished.

The workers’ side also argues that regulations should be made regarding the taxation of the minimum wage. According to data from the ministry, 37 percent of private sector employees receive the minimum wage.

Although Türk-İş President Atalay said his red line is TL 7,785 minimum wage, other participants have yet to pronounce a figure.

THE PARTIES ARE EXPECTED TO AGREE TODAY

The minimum wage, the EYT and the price increases for civil servants and retirees continue to be monitored in the market due to the direct and indirect effects of the elections to be held no later than June 2023 and the 85 percent inflation level.

In addition, the effects of the process on the Treasury and the Unemployment Insurance Fund are also monitored.

President Tayyip ErdoÄŸan met with Treasury and Finance Minister Nureddin Nebati and Bilgin last month about the minimum wage and EYT employer costs.

It is planned to eliminate the SSI premium difference between retired and non-retired employees, while working with Treasury-backed KGF guarantees with financing terms suitable for the severance burden employers will face due to EYT.

Commission participants say that starting today, the third meeting, they aim to determine the minimum wage unanimously. (Reuters)
