Walnut price storm ahead of Christmas

Here are the champions of the walk in nuts: the price of pistachios has increased 3 times in 15 days

Walnuts also got their share of needle-in-thread price hikes across the country. The champions of the walk on dried nuts – the coveted food of New Year’s tables – have been determined.

The pistachio, which was planted three times in the first two weeks of December, rose from 150 lira to 350 lira, became the champion of the month’s rise and ranked third in the annual average.

In annual increases, pumpkin seeds rose 190.91 percent from 55 lira to 160 lira and ranked first. Salted peanuts, which rose 142 percent from 35 lira to 85 lira, came in second.

M. Bülent Özcan, who wholesales and retails walnuts to companies in the Marmaris district of Muğla, made a statement to SÖZCÜ about dried walnuts, which are constantly increasing.

‘WE CANNOT GET TO CHANGE THE LABEL’

Özcan said: “The pistachio, which was sold at 150 lira per kilo in December last year, increased to 220 TL in the middle of this year. At the beginning of December, with an increase of 50 lire, his weight increased to 270 lire. Whatever happens after this walk, the figure increased to 300 lira in a week. Two or three days later, the figure was 330 and then on December 15, the salary increased to 350 lire,” he said.

M. Bülent Özcan, who stated that they could not keep changing labels with the constant price increases, said: “There is no harvest period or risk of frost in pistachios. The products are collected and stored. I can’t find anything to say about 3 different hikes done in 15 days. On December 12 or 13 the figure rose to 330 lire. One day after writing the labels and hanging them on the product, we were told that the new figure was 350 lira. “We were surprised at what we were going to do,” he said.

‘WEIGHT, GRAMS ARE UP, THEY WANT 20, 30 LIRA’

Özcan stated that as the numbers increased, the sales volumes also decreased. However, since the middle of the year, these purchases began to be mentioned in figures. They started buying products in the form of 20, 30 or 50 lire depending on their financial situation or saying that it is enough when weighed by eye.

The decline in purchasing power also created differences in customer buying trends. Since Marmaris is a tourist region, we can say that there has not been much change in shopping for foreigners. But the way they buy it either clearly states their need in grams, or they supply it in kilos if they are going to buy it in exchange. Compared to last year, there was a serious decline and reduction in the product base in domestic customers,” he said.
