China Steps Against US Chip Export Restrictions
The United States introduced a comprehensive set of restrictions in October to curb the development of China’s semiconductor industry.
“China has taken the necessary legal steps under the World Trade Organization to raise our concerns and uphold our legitimate interests,” China’s Ministry of Commerce said in a statement last night.
The statement also claimed that the restrictions imposed by the United States “threaten the stability of global industry supply chains.”
USA: THESE STEPS ARE RELATED TO NATIONAL SECURITY
Adam Hodge, a spokesman for the US Department of Commerce, said: “We have received a request from China for consultations on US steps in semiconductors. “As we noted in our response to China, these steps have to do with national security and the World Trade Organization is not an appropriate forum to discuss national security issues,” he said.
The work of the dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organization, which is used for the resolution of foreign trade disputes between countries, can take a long time. Although the dispute resolution calendar begins with consultations, some issues are never resolved within the organization as the US blocks appointments to the World Trade Organization’s dispute resolution board.
