Big rise in milk, cheese and butter prices

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) announced inflation data for November today. In terms of consumer prices, butter was the product with the highest price increase in November compared to the previous month. The monthly increase in the price of this product was 17.58 percent.

According to the data announced by TURKSTAT, the prices of dairy products increased considerably in November. Fresh milk and cheese followed butter, which was the walk-in champion in November.

While the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 2.88 percent monthly in November, annual consumer price inflation decreased to 84.39 percent.

The largest contribution to food inflation came from dairy products. According to TUIK data, butter’s rise was followed by fresh milk with 15.71 percent and cheese with 15.05 percent last month.

‘THE PRICE OF CHEESE EXCEEDS THE PRICE OF MEAT’

Consumers found prices ranging from TL 130 to TL 225 per kilogram of butter in chain markets as of December. While cheddar started at 154 TL, prices on many brands went up to 200 TL.

In days gone by, cheese prices on the shelves of some markets were seen to exceed meat prices, and a warning was received from farmers.

Şemsi Bayraktar, President of the Turkish Union of Agricultural Chambers (TZOB), warned of price increases in dairy products, saying: “Cheese prices in some markets exceeded meat prices. In such an environment, we have to take urgent measures for both the producer and the consumer.”

In his statement, Bayraktar said: “Cost increases in meat and milk production make production unsustainable. In an environment where cheese prices exceed meat prices in some markets, we need to take urgent action for both producer and consumer.

‘REASON FOR LACK OF SUPPLY’

Türk-İş, which measures food inflation every month, also announced that the prices of all products in the milk, yogurt and cheese group have risen in the hunger poverty line data released last week. ; He indicated that the most important reason for the price increase was the lack of supply.

Consequently, while the price of cheap market brand milk increased to 15.5 TL, the overall average price per liter increased by 8 percent in one month, exceeding 20 TL for the first time. In November, there was a 12 percent increase in cheese prices and a 5 percent increase in yogurt.
