Americans spent $9.1 billion shopping online on Black Friday

According to a report published yesterday, American consumers spent a record $9.12 billion online on this Black Friday sales day despite the pressure of high inflation.

While some US sites discounted heavily on products like technology and household items, this led to a huge spending frenzy on Black Friday.

Online spending broke a record on Black Friday this year, rising 2.3 percent from last year, according to data released by Adobe Analytics. Sales were 221 percent higher than the average day in October. Electronics, toys and exercise equipment were the top sellers.

INCREASED MORE THAN EXPECTED

Adobe Analytics, which measures e-commerce volume by analyzing transactions on shopping sites, has access to data covering purchases at 85 percent of the 100 largest Internet retailers in the United States. The company had forecast Black Friday sales to rise 1 percent this year.

Even though the pandemic has reduced physical purchases in stores in the past two years, consumers were expected to flock to malls with the lifting of restrictions this year. While images of crowded stores were frequent on the media agenda in previous years, normal shopping traffic was seen this year.

WHAT IS BLACK FRIDAY?

Called “Legendary Friday” and “Magnificent Friday” in Turkey, Black Friday takes place on the Friday after Thanksgiving. On Black Friday, which has been implemented since the 1960s, companies try to revive consumption by making various discounts.

This shopping day was first mentioned in newspapers in 1961 as Black Friday. It is believed that it was given this name due to the heavy traffic and difficulties that shopping caused in Philadelphia on that day. In recent years, Black Friday has been positively received in the retail industry.
