New car sales increase in the EU in May

The European Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA) has announced the new vehicle registration data for the EU countries for the month of May.

Consequently, new car sales in EU countries increased by 18.5 percent last month compared to the same period in 2022 and reached 938,950.

The registrations of new vehicles in the member countries of the Union increased 18 percent in January-May 2023 compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 4 million 393 thousand 951.

36.5 PERCENT GASOLINE

36.5 percent of new cars sold in EU countries in May are gasoline, 25 percent hybrid, 14.3 percent diesel, 13.8 percent fully electric, 7.4 percent plug-in hybrids and 3 percent also made up of other fuels.

Electric car sales in EU countries rose 70.9 percent in May compared to the same period a year earlier, reaching 129,847.

Car sales between EU countries rose 23.1 percent in Italy, 19.2 percent in Germany and 14.8 percent in France in May compared with the same period last year.

Among the 27 member countries of the Union, the largest number of new cars was put on the road in Germany in May. During this period, 246,966 new cars were registered in Germany, 149,373 in Italy, 145,536 in France and 92,025 in Spain.

THE VW GROUP MADE THE MOST SALES

According to the manufacturers, the VW Group sold the most new cars in the EU in May, with 243.13.

Stellantis Group trailed VW Group in new vehicle sales in the EU. Stellantis Group, which includes brands such as Peugeot, Fiat, Citroen and Opel, sold 170,296 cars.

The Renault Group ranked third with 104,089 new cars, while the Hyundai Group ranked fourth with 78,473 vehicles. (AA)
