5x growth target in electric vehicles

Regulations are being made one after another to reduce the carbon footprint all over the world, especially in the European Union countries. One of the most important pillars in decarbonization policies is the automotive industry. While almost all car brands switch to electric vehicle production, sales of these vehicles are increasing exponentially every year. Although EV sales in Turkey are not as fast as in Europe and the US, the market is expected to grow rapidly with the launch of the national Togg electric car. While 2,846 electric cars were sold in 2021, this figure increased to 7,733 in 2022. The share of electric cars in total car sales was 1.3 percent. The number of cars sold in 2022 was 592,660.

INCREASE YOUR PARTICIPATION

The automotive industry’s sales target for electric vehicles in 2023 is shown at the level of 40 thousand, an increase of 5 times compared to the previous year. Although sales of 650,000 cars are expected in the domestic market this year, the share of electric vehicles here will exceed 6 percent. In the period January-March 2023, car sales increased 50.1 percent compared to the previous year and reached 175,421 units. In this period, sales of electric cars rose 2.7 percent with 4,670 units. In the first three months of the year, sales of autogas (LPG) cars were made in 2,762 units, with a share of 1.6 percent and behind electric vehicles. In the same period, the increase in sales of hybrid cars drew attention. Hybrid vehicles, of which 18,874 were sold, had a 10.8 percent share of total sales.

Prices reach 1 million TL

The cheapest electric car was the Citroen 2-seater Ami with a range of 75 kilometers, priced at 245,900 TL. Looking at the prices of electric vehicles in segment B and C of the brands, Fiat 500 model 889,900 TL, Opel Corsa 909,900 TL, Renault Zoe 902,900 TL, Hyundai Kona 976,000 TL, Peugeot 2008 model 1,023,000 TL. Togg’s starting price was 953 thousand TL.

You can enter the top 5 in Europe

Mahmut Ulubaş, CEO of electric car brand Skywell, stated that the trend regarding electric vehicles in Turkey is developing very quickly and the market will gain even more momentum with the introduction of Togg. Ulubaş said: “An additional tax came, but the market grew. Togg and Tesla entered the market. Chery announced its electric cars. There is a very rapid transformation in the automotive market. Türkiye can be in the top 5 in Europe in 2-3 years,” he said.
